Position Summary: The United Way of Albany County is an independent not-for-profit corporation located in Laramie, Wyoming. Its mission is to improve lives by uniting people and resources. The Executive Director is the chief professional officer of the United Way and is directly responsible to the Board of Directors. Within the framework of the organization’s policies and by-laws, the Executive Director has the authority to direct the day-to-day operations of the United Way and to implement the policies of the Board of Directors. The Executive Director, in conjunction with the Board of Directors, represents and promotes the United Way to the community.

Reporting Relationship: The Executive Director is responsible to the Board of Directors and communicates through the President of the Board of Directors. The Executive Director answers to the Board of Directors. The Executive Director is the public face of the United Way of Albany County, and as such, is responsible for all aspects of the organization including but not limited to the following essential functions.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- General and administrative responsibilities
- Recommend policies to the board and assist the board in the formulation, interpretation, and implementation of policies for the effective and economical operation of the agency.
- Develop and recommend long-and short-range plans to the board.
- Assure that United Way functions in accordance with the by-laws and Board policies.
- Chief administrative responsibility for public accountability, maintenance of office and equipment and reporting to various bodies.
- Ensure that the legal obligations of the agency are met.
- Aid in the recruitment of a dedicated and competent Board of Directors representative of the community.
- Establish, implement, and periodically update a comprehensive strategic plan subject to the approval and direction of the Board.
- Ensure required reports to United Way Worldwide are submitted.
- Agency assets and finances
- Draft the annual operating budget in consultation with the Finance and Committee for approval by the Board of Directors and monitor the budget once approved.
- Direct all day-to-day financial operations of the agency.
- Prepare monthly financial reports for the Board of Directors. Including overseeing payroll, accounts payable and receivable, and grants management.
- Ensure that an audit firm is selected annually by the Board of Directors and aid the firm in the preparation of the annual financial audit.
- In partnership with accounting & auditing firms, assure:
- receivable, cash disbursements, payroll, monthly bank reconciliation and general ledger transactions.
- the timely deposit of the federal and state payroll taxes and filing of the quarterly 941 and state reports.
- preparation of forms W-2, 1099, W-3, W-4 and the timely filing of all necessary grant, state, and federal reports.
- Resource development and fundraising activities
- Develop fundraising activities, recruiting sponsors and volunteers, while encouraging financial support through promotional activities. Including developing and implementing an annual campaign in partnership with the campaign chair(s).
- Develop and maintain professional relationships with donors. c. Oversee writing grants, letters, making speeches, and monitoring the activities of all fundraising activities, including the annual campaign.
- Oversee the design and implementation of resource development plans, communications, and recognition events.
- Ensure efficient solicitation, collection, and record-keeping through a CRM system.
- Community building activities
- Recommend and/or provide input on proposed new programs and services.
- Work with agency leadership to identify and address community problems and reports findings to the Board of Directors to facilitate development of long-range strategic plans to meet community needs.
- Evaluate the services being provided by nonprofit agencies in relation to United Way goals and standards and recommends funding levels to the Board of Directors as needed.
- Interpret trends in the fields of service in which funded agencies are engaged by maintaining involvement in the human services field.
- Provide leadership for periodic community needs assessments, information and referral databases and other similar undertakings.
- Develop and maintain a sound working relationship with affiliated agencies and promotes inter-agency cooperation.
- Ensure that United Way funds are used for the purposes specified in the grant application.
- Provide staff support for the Community Impact Committee and contracted staff.
- Supervise staff and operations
- Provide overall day-to-day leadership and direction of the personnel function of the organization including participation in the development of personnel policies and procedures.
- Manage personnel including hiring, professional development, supervision, record keeping, evaluation and termination of staff.
- Oversee office operations including the management of time, space, and equipment resources.
- Apprise the Board of Directors of staff activities and progress towards goals.
- Assure that staff support is provided to Board committees and volunteers.
- Enhance organizational relationships
- Cultivate community support for United Way of Albany County by developing and maintaining a positive working relationship with local civic, businesses, union, and community leaders.
- With staff, develop and distribute news releases and promotional materials.
- Maintain appropriate relations with other government, professional and social service agencies in the community.
- Maintain a cooperative relationship with other United Way organizations.
- Promote the mission of the United Way in the community through public relations programs, including personal contact and the media.
- Other duties as assigned by the President of the Board of Directors
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills
- Undergraduate degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
- Experience working in the nonprofit sector or experience in the leadership and management of organizations of comparable size and mission.
- Experience with volunteers and diverse boards.
- Ability to set clear priorities, to command the confidence and respect of stakeholders, and to drive and monitor progress.
- Experience in collaboratively developing and monitoring the implementation of strategic plans and organizational goals.
- Excellent relationship building skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external audiences.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication and presentation skills with demonstrated success as an outgoing self-starting professional.
- Strong commitment to the professional development and mentoring of staff; successful track record of recruitment and retention of a dynamic staff.
- Experience building revenue and increasing philanthropic support.
- A demonstrated track record of promoting diversity and an ability to build collaboration with the community at large.
